WHAT IS A DIGITAL PAINTING?
I have come to digital painting from a traditional fine art background, working for over 20 years in mediums such as oil paint on canvas and pastels.
A couple of years ago I started applying this knowledge and experience to digital painting.
Watch this short video to see my set up and how I create a digital painting, building an image up from scratch, in the same way I would if using oil paint or pastel.
CAN I SEE HOW THIS PIECE WAS MADE?
Absolutely, watch this time-lapse of how this painting evolved.
This is a Green Turtle from Flynn Reef (the great barrier reef in Australia). He is based on an image taken by friends of mine who went on a dive there.
Did you know? Green turtles get their name from the greenish colour of their cartilage and fat, not their shells.
He is my first painting of an ocean creature and my eyes were taken on an extraordinary journey into this underwater world of colours & textures.
Green turtles are on the endangered species list. Along with the dangers of fishing nets, their eggs are overharvested, adults are hunted for their parts and as a source of food, and they are gradually losing their beach nesting sites.
I hope that in some way, celebrating the beauty of these turtles through art, will help raise awareness of their plight!
